NAVAL EXTENSION.
MORE SHIPS NEEDED. INCREASING THE SECOND LINE. LONDON, October 12. Lord Charles Beresford, speaking at a gathering at Sheffield last evening, insisted on the need for increasing the fleet. "If," he added, "the oversea supply of food and raw material were stopped for a month the Government would be forced to treat with an enemy." Mr. R. B. Haldane (Secretary for War) said: "We must keep command of the sea, and possibly we may be obliged to strengthen the navy. Moreover, besides the great professional overseas army we must have a citizen army, whose sheer weight would crush an invading force or compel an invader to come in such strength that the transports would be a sure target for our navy.'' Mr. Haldane mentioned that he had that day seen tbe work in progress in Sheffield in connection with the cruiser (the Zealandia), which New Zealand was providing.
