HU_T_,Y. The monthly meeting of the Town Board ■J a „. ae , ld _ on Thursday evening. Mr J. P. Bailey (chairman) presiding. A letter was read from the. Health Officer, reporting a serious case of overcrowding in Huntly, through several famdlies living under one roof. It was decided to take steps to have the matter attended to at once, as suggested by the Health Officer. Letters were received from several firms regarding the supply of electrical fittings, etc, for the proposed electric lighting scheme, and also a letter from Mr Birks, engineer-in-charge at Rotorua, stating that the Government had two dynamos for sale, which he considered would he suitable for Huntly, and offered to get a quotation from his department St the Board considered It necessary. The letter was remitted to Mr Wyllie, engineer, for advice. It was decided to make strong representations in regard to the proposed 'bridge to the Minister for iPu-blic Works, and refer to his promise of : June 20, to put an authorisation bill through this se_sion for the construction of ' a short line of (railway from Huntly railway station to the west sldre of the Wai- j kato river, so as to enable the Railway i .Department to undertake the erection of ! the bridge. The clerk was instructed to j find out if the Minister, in the event of the j general authorisation bill not being brought i forward this session, will put a special ! bill through. It was decided to call tenders for the formation of about __S chains of the Great South-road, in -front of the Taupiri Coal Company's cottages. HUNTLY, Thursday. F. Capstick. WHAEEOEA. A pleasing ceremony took place in the Brvnavon School on Tuesday. August 16, when the children of the school presented the teacher, Mr Walter England, with a walking stick, in token of their appreciation of his pant services. Mr England, who is leaving here to take charge of a school in the Hokianga district, will be a distinct loss to this district. PAKURANGA. The annual tea meeting of the Howick nnd Pakuranga Band of Hope was held in the Pakuranga Hall on Tuesday evening. There was a record attendance, the hall being packed. The tables were presided over by the Misses Agnes Andrew, Jessie Andrew, Elsie Bel!, Alice Andrew. A. Brnce, V. McKenzie, and D. Worsley. After tea, the following programme was rendered, Mr. R. Miss V. McKenzie; violin solo, Miss M. Worsley; recitation. Miss M. Kelsey: song. Miss A. Webb; address. Mr. Evans; piano solo, Miss Nicholson; recitation. Miss Kelsey. I OTAHUHU. The Boy Scouts, in charge of the Rev. H. Mason, gave an entertainment at the Orphan Home, Papatoetoe, on Wednesday evening. The programme, which was much enjoyed by the orphans, consisted of songs by iMlss Morrin and Scout H. Levy, selections by the Bugle Band, and concluded with ■a short farce entitled "The Dentist." Refreshments were handed round. Messrs Andrew and Andrew kindly conveyed the Scouts to and from the Home tree at charge. Captain Herrold's property, consisting of 24 acres fronting Portage-road nud the Great South-road, has been purchased by a syndicate. It is stated that the price paid was close on £3000.
