HOCKEY,

The match between Auckland and Wellington for the New Zealand Hockey Association Challenge Shield is fixed to ■take place at Wellington on September 3rd.

The Mokoia Hockey Club hold H concert in St. Andrew's Hall on Monday night. Tho proceeds will be devoted towards the expenses of sending the ladies' representative team to Nelson in August.

A narrow margin of one goal was the difference between College Rifles and Training College—in the former's favour—when the game terminated last Saturday. It was exciting and brimful of interest from start to finish. The territorials played a great game, and no one begrudges them their hardearned victory. Training College were unfortunate in losing Johns, who was compelled to retire, and, although the" Rifles' skipper good-naturedly allowed a substitute, Johns was greatly missed in the shooting department. There were many kaleidoscopic changes in this game. The crack volunteer corps' representatives would attack fiercely. Then suddenly the students' backs would clear aiid put their forvrarde in motion, and they would take their turn in assaulting their opponents' citadel.

United and Pimpernel monopolised the spectators' attention far more than the senior contest on the adjoining ground. It was a keen and strenuous game throughout. Pimpernel scored in the first ten minutes, but United pegged away, and the result was three goals to two in their favour. After United were in the van, Pimpernel made vigorous efforts to score, and although they did find the net, the referee ruled no goal on account of offside play. The game could not exactly be called fast; nevertheless both sides frequently indulged in those passing rushes, which are so effective and spectacular. Hallam, in goal for United, gave a clinking display. The halves all worked splendidly, and Barnard, Howarth and Treanor were the most prominent in the forwards. Pimpernel is an evenly-balanced side, and their combination at times was worthy of better results. Perhaps the most conspicuous was the trio of forwards Murray, Maedonald and Duffus. LABIES' HOCKEY. The 'championship of the Auckland Ladies' Association was continued at Remuera on Saturday, the play in some of the matches being of a very high order. In. the Rangatira A W Training College match, the forwards of the former team worked well together, the play of Misses Cooke and Steele being an outstanding feature. Of the other° forwards, Misses "Vaile and Abbott also played good games. The backs had very little to do, but when they were wanted each lady was equal to the occasion. For Training College Misses Hewitt and Stevens were good on the defensive, and Misses Western, Bcrryman and Silvester all played good games.

The Arawa-Moaiia niateli was watched with interest, but the defeat of Moana by 7 to nil came as a great surprise. Moana were unfortunate in having some of their best players absent, but in spite of the strength of Araiva, the greens kept the ball going from end to

For Moana, 'Misses Bennett (2), Goodie and Jenkins did a- Jot of useful work, but tne team 13 in need of hard, straight shooters ia the circle.

In the Rawhiti-UnitaTian match tne former team showed better form, and played with more combination than on other occasions. For the winners Misses F. Little, Harrison, Good-win and Dawson played up well, the bocks having very little to do. Miss Moore and F. Mackenzie (Unitarian) were very consistent throughout the game, and were good on the defence.

Ao-tea-roa met Kopana and were defeated by 2to nil. For the losers Misse s K. Norton and G. Rocke stuck well to the game, and for the winners Misses MoCullagh, Dalton and M. Clark showed up well, the first-named being very sure as fullback.
