AUCKLAND RAILWAYS LEAGUE

At a meeting of the council on Thursday afternoon, it was resolved to draft lor signature a petition to Parliament, praying that work might, he commenced at v,he Waihi end of the Waihi-Gisbo-rne railway; also tiat a petition, drawn up on the lines of the memorial which was presented to the Premier some time ago, be drawn up for signature and presentation to Parliament, praying for an inquiry as to the deviation of the North Trunk line. On the request of the Ohura Railway League, with its branches, Otangrwai, Matiere, and Niho Nino, they were accepted for affiliation with this League, having sent subscriptions to it; and as to their request that this League should help them to bring pressure to bear upon the Government to begin work at the Ongarue end of the Stratford-Ongarue railway, it was resolved to fall in with this request, and to draft a petition for signature and presentation to Parliament, praying for relief in the manner indicated. A letter'was received from the Manganui County Agricultural and Pastoral Association, asking for the help of the League to urge the Government to extend the railway northwards more rapidly via Waihou and Mangamuka; also asking the .help of this League to urge the Government to complete the Wfcan-garei-Kaikohe line at the earliest possible date, and intimating that they were forming a branch.railway League for that county. It was resolved to welcome the forma-tion of a branch Lea- ' gue, and to say that the Auckland Railways League would support their movement to have the railway extended northwards as rapidly as possible. \ The Fanners' Union wrote enclosing ■ resolutions which were passed at the last Farmers' 'Conference, and as these are entirely on the lines of agitation, which ■tins League has been keeping up for so many years, the League agreed to support the Farmers' resolutions.
