BAKERS AND PASTRYCOOKS.
REPORT OF FEDERATION CON--FERENCE. A conference of operative bakers ana pastrycooks representing the Dominion has concluded a sitting during the present week in Auckland. Dunedin was represented by Messrs. J. Oliver and J. Brown; Christchurch, Messrs. H. Chillingworth and J. S. Wilson; Timaru, Mr. J. Doekrlll; Greymouth, Mi\ J. S. Wilson; Gisborne, Mr. W. C. Nisbett; Wellington, Messrs. Andrew Collins and A. E. Godfrey; Auckland, Messrs. A. J. Lewis and O. J. Veale. The object of the conference was to federate all bakers and pastrycooks' unions of workers. Federation rules and the registration of the association, is to be effected as early as possible. Claims forming the basis of an application for a Dominion award were formulated and discussed in detail, such proposed application to be accepted as the standard for the affiliated unions. The questions of daylight baking, night baking, technical training, and other subjects of vital interest to the trade were dis.cussed. It was considered that vigorous efforts were required to improve the general conditions of bakers and pastrycooks. The visiting delegates were entertained at a smoke concert' and' social by the members of the Bakers' Union, when a most enjoyable evening was spent. The visitors left by train and steamer to-day, being greatly pleased with the evident enthusiasm of members and the kindly treatment accorded to them. The executive council will be located in Auckland for 12 months, Mr. O. "J". Veale ;being appointed federation secretary.
