BEAUTIFYING THE CITY.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —The efforts being made to beautify the City of Auckland and make it attractive to visitors and a pride and pleasure to the citizens are most commendahle. W'liile Aucklandcrs are ju^stly proud of the views of the harbour on the east side of the city, it should not be forgotten tha/t the upper reaches, on the west, with their headlands, bays, reefs and sunsets, are not without their beauty. The City Council has ju-st completed a most necessary and line piece of work in the formation of Argylestreet, which forms part of a drive, near the shore front, much patronised by visitors. Were the Council now to form Marine Parade, which is in a wretched state of disrepair, there would be available ono of the finest circular drives in the city, via St. MaryVroad, Sarsfield-street, Argylc-street, and Marine Parade, into Jervois-road. All that is required is that Marine Parade be formed and made fit for traffic. In view of the almost unanimous desire for an esplanade along the sea-front, for which the means are not at present available, here is the very next best, ready to hand—a public work that will not only be a boon to the residents in the vicinity, but give pleasure to hundreds of persons who walk or drive in search of health or pleasure. It is earnestly desired that the City Council may have this most useful public work carried out at an early date.—l am, etc., G. W. MURRAY.
