Pnllen, charged with having, on January Ist, at Tangaithi, taken part in a raffle for a junvornantent -by means of dice, was fined HXTNTfS - . HtFNTLY, Wednesday. On Monday evening, Mr T. Mills, nursery, nan at the Waerenga Experimental Farm, Save a most interesting lecture in the Huntly District School, at the invitation of the School Committee, to the senior scholars md parents, on "How to Grow Vegetables in a Kitchen Garden all the Year Round." The annual meeting of the parishioners 3f St. Paul's (Anglican) Church, Huutly, took place at the conclusion of last Sunday jvening's service, the vicar (Rev. A. J. Beck) presiding over a good attendance. The bal-mce-sheet showed that the finances of the church were in a sound and healthy condition, while the report stated that the attendance at the ordinary church sen-ices as well as at Holy Comimmion Irad greatly improved during the past year. Office-bear-ers -were appointed as follow: — Minister's warden, Mr B. N. Housley, sen.; people's warden, Mr J. A. Parkes; vestry Messrs W. H. Bailey, C. Richards, Hessell T Hitchcock, G. Milter, and T. Spence; auditor, Mr F. Twiname. The weekly meeting of the Huntly Literary and Debating Society was held in the Methodist Church on Friday evening, when Mr E. Hnnter read an excellent paper entitled, "An Appreciation of Tennyson." Mr Capstick, who had a narow escape of bis nfe thiongi a shot going off tarice in Ralph's mine last week, is progressing favourably. Mr Fred. Knapper, who met with >n ac-cidan-t 6everal weeks ago, to Ms eye, in the Extended mine, and has been under treatment iv the Anckland Hospital, has had his eye removed. A horse was killed on Sunday morning by the Wellington Express, opposite the Presbyterian Church manse, Huntly. Mr K. D. Stewart, Inspector of Schools, paid a surprise visit to the various schools In the district last week. There was a large attendance at the special meeting of the Waiiato Miners' Union, held in the Volunteer Hall, the President (Mr Jas. Fulton) occupying the ekair. by the individual -rotes of the members of the various unions affiliated to the new organisation, prior to the date ot the annual conference. The following -were nominated, viz.: President, Mr EC. F. Armstrong (Greymouth); vice-president, Mr James Fulton (Huntly); secretary. Mr J. Glover (State Collieries, Greymouth); organiser, Mr Robt. Semple; nomination to the treasurcrship being left open. It was decided to submit six remits for consideration of the annual conference from the local union.
