The Australians' first in- - nings closed for 168, two ahead of Taranaki's score. The local team's second ■ venture realised 157, and when stamps ■were drawn Australia had lost eight : '■" •jriekets for 13S. The match provided an i '■- exciting finish. Requiring 10 runs to •-.-.. win at a quarter to six, and all the re- ' liarble batsmen out, the Australians appealed against the light, and the game ■ ended in a draw. Southall, the left-hand bowler, principally accounted for the -Ismail score of the Australians, capturing ■Tt during the match 11 wickets for 127 urns, and bowling unchanged through--3 cut. I ' WEUUDsGTON CRITICISM. -*"' • |6y Telegraph.— Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. ';-*■ ,' That particular ■ section of the com- "« inanity which takes its cricket seriously Is saying some unkind, things concerning ." -P. Midkne's omission from the Dominion ggr team to meet the Australians in the §§ second Test match,■'beginning on Saturj| day; and the opinion is: freely expressed ft, that Canterbury influence has been, at ■work -with the selector; Mr. Dug. Hay in Slf excluding the ■.Wellington man from the g|||i team. Before leaving, for Australia Borne seven, or eight years ago, Midlane, of Wellington; was generally recognised _ " as being one of the very best batsmen ■-, in New Zealand;! Both A. EX Trott and H. Trumble during their visits have cor- ; ioborated; this; view. In the present year SEdlane's scores in rep. and cup : wicket aggregate something like 532 for •even completed innings, giving an average of 76. -Against■ the Anstralians he : has batted/ four times and made top •. More on two of- these occasions. In the ■only other representative match he ||M,took part in, he made top score in both V.jijjminga. These figures, however, do not -_s| appear to.be good enough for a place ; r, m the Slew Zealand team, so the critics referred to presume that there are _- ! batsmen in New Zealand cricket to-day .. . : to whom an- average of 7.6- is nothing
