"SYMPATHETIC" STRIKERS.
RBTUHNEKG TO WORK. 1 (Received 3.45 a.m.) | NEW YORK, March 23. I The 35,000 textile workers and 2200 ' bricidayers who went out on strike in ' ] Philadelphia in sympathy with the tram- ; way employees, have abandoned their i strike and are returning to work. "In ease of a strike the city will aid the company to run its cars," said Mayor i Eeyiburn, of Philadelphia, on the eve of ! the strike. "Even if they only have I enough, men to run ten. cars, they will tie run. The police will keep the streets ! open in spite of anything. 1 have at-i tended every board meeting of the Rapid I Transit Company, and I have seen no i action taken that could possibly afford ! an excuse for the men to strike. The I company desires to get men who will stay with them and become permanent ; employees. In that way they will be: able to build up a permanent system of I capable employees who will work for the 1 best interests of the company, will pro- I vent accidents and will make a pension ; lor themselves when they grow old. Per- j sonally, I would like to see the men get i 2o or 50 cents an hour if it were pos- j sible. But the company is in no posi- j tion to pay it. It i 3 now paying as much as it can." The officials of the union, ■on being questioned on the attitude of I the Mayor, strongly resented his asserted j position as a public servant. What particularly enraged the workers was the Mayor's statement that "the company , is now paying as much as it can." Tie ■union men hold that it is not the place of the Mayor to say the men are paid enough. •
