Nominations for all events at the Avondale Jockey Club's Annual Meeting close with the secretary. Sir 11. H. Hayr, to-morrow (Thursday) at 0 p.m. . A three-year-old has been successful in the Easter Handicap the last two years in succession. Salute, a three-year-old, is favourite for this year's event. . ' It is freely stilted that there is very little pro-haliiHty of W.-iloue being brought to Auckland to fulfil his engagements at the A.R.C. Autumn Meeting. Nominations for all events at the Papaknra Racing. Club's Annual Meeting will close with the secretary (Mr F. D. Yonge) to-niorro.w (Thursday) at 0 p.m. The well-known rider C. Jenkins has been engaged to ride Killndini in the Easter Handicap at the C.J.C. meeting. Mr. Watt's representative is reported in capital form. ' There was no work of importance on the tracks tt Ellerslie this morning, all the horses . being restricted to light exercise. Dunborve Jumped a couple of fences in good style. ! The Brighton Hurdles candidate, • Proi p-het, struck a fence while being schooled, I and dislodged hie rider. Prophet has been slightly lame since the occurrence, but the mishap is not a serious one. : The horses Bquirtas, Ambrosian, and Merrivonla were brought from the South by the Main Trunk train last night to fulfil engagements at the A.R.C. Autumn Meeting, and are quartered at the Harp of Erin stable. A Press Association wire from Palmerston North gives the information that King's Prize, which was engaged at the ('.J.C meeting, died of an internal complaint yesterday. King's Prize won a number of hack eren'cs recently, and gave much promise. It transpires that all arrangements had been made to ship Maori King and Wiiumera to Auckland for the A.R.C. Autumn I Meeting, but. ou arrival at the train. it was , found that Maori King was very lame, anil,--under the circumstances, it was deemed advisable to cancel the trip. A Press Association wire from JVellingtou states that Peuntes was old yesterday ! by the Wellington sportsman who races as j -A.' Barclay." Mr. K. W. Paterson is the purchaser,' and the price paid was £500, Penates will carry Mr. Paterson's colours at the Easter meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club. , The gelding Sir Rupert, which was one of the batch of youngsters brought from Sydney some years ago by the late George Wright, has put down three odds on favourites in succession at the recent country meetings. At Waltal he defeated Explosive; at the Thames, Captain Soult; and at Paeroa, Necktie. ■'■ The Great Northern Champagne Stakes, which this season Is run on the second day of the A.U.C. Autumn Meeting, promises tc provide an exceptionally good race. Blrk-. dß*lc and War Song, the two Napier-ownctT colts, have arrived, both looking well, and their mee-tinjr with the local cracks Is being' keenly looked forward to. The withdrawal of Maori King from the A.R.C. Easter Handicap was a big blow, to early backers, and has been the means..of I greatly shortening the prices on offer against Equitas and Salute, which now rule as equal favourites. Maori King's defection will ml) the race of a lot of interest, for,, fit and well, • the son of Maori King would have been very hard to beat. The local crack two-year-old Ashby tins sufficiently recovered from the mishap which befel him just before Christmas to be g-iveu exercise, and he was being ridden yesterday. Ashby looks none the worse for his enforced spell, and has kept his condition wonderfully, so that, all going well in the mean time, he may reproduce his brilliant form oe a three-year-old. • ■ ■■■.■' The mishap to the Leolantls gelding I/ep turns, out to be mpre serious than at first anticipated, and there is no chance of his fulfilling his engagements at the A.R.C. Autumn Meeting. The accident came at a most Inopportune time, for Leo was going exceptionally well in his work, and. with ordinary luck. 'Would have been very bard to boat in any of the events In which he started. "",„;,: TTTRF TALK FROM. THE' SOUTH. j (By Telegraph.— Special to "Star.") *•',- , J '• CHRISTCHURCH, this day. ■» ! Rain showers at all sorts of times, and I much colder weather during the last day or I two have added something to the . troubles ; ■ of trainers 'Who are preparing for the C.J.C [i Autumn Meeting, bnt a number of horses ■ continue to do attractive work on the Ric- ; ■ carton track, . and the meeting looks like be- ,! ing the most successful• ever held l>y the ■ ! C.J.C. at this time of the year. Owing no • i doubt to the changeable weather we are es- '' periencing, several horses- are suffering from i' colds, Included in the number being Madam I Madcap and Tiaraed, but, fortunately, the ' attack so far. has, proved of a fairly mild nature, and lias not prevented either, filly . from working dally. . ■'*.-'' v :| ■'• P.i6s,lon has been galloping pleasingly, "and ■ i she has many admirers who entertain thp ■ belief that she will run even more promini ently in the Easter Handicap than when she , was- beaten a head by Los ■ Angelos for ' second place iv last year's race. .*■:.. TKilwixming appears, to have thrown , off the effects of the soreness that was troub- , ling htm, and is bowling along again in his usual resolute manner; ;i.' '■■- .... * ■'•.;■ : ' j .•;; Gulanforte is galloping more kindJy on the '~ track than I have previously sees him, and i> as he is ' looking particularly well now, he ! should perform with credit In his neat essay. : It is a great pity that this fine horse has an infirmity in his wind. ' f- , Prim is improving daily, but I am inclined to think she may be just a little too • backward :. to do herself justice -.-. at this , .meeting. . Tikitere, on the other hand, has probably, never been better than" at present. - ! Bonny Glen is being hacked ; about prei peretory to gxAng into} active work:; in. view ; , of winter, racing- The eon of Crest Is looking lusty ana well, as the resnlt of his en--forced spelt anJJ».the.les which gave trouble

having fined dawn considerably, It is quite <m the cards that Murray Ayueley will get another race or two out of him. . ■ JMabolo will be ridden in. toe Great Autumn Handicap bj" C. Jenkins. In consequence of his win in the Waimate Cap Crqnstadt will have to pat up a 51b penalty in the Great Kaster Handicap. . > Maori King broke down just before he was to hare been shipped to' Auckland. ' In consequence of this, neither he nor "Wimmera will, make the trip north. ■ Cfrayitation will not fulfil any of his en- . gagements at the C.J.C. 'Autumn. Meeting, having gone amiss. The full brother' to Provocation is in the. sale list. .; , ■ -.•: The six-year-old gelding Tyrau-t, by the Government horee Tyranny, continued his winning form nt'.the little meeting held at Oxford ou Saturday, securing a couple of t races. " ~"-.... - < Trayer Wheel, a filly by Pilgrim's Progress. who has shown some ability, puller! £ up lame after running second to Shillelagh -] in the Oxford Cup on Saturday, and she is '{ not likely to race again this season. ; Penates figures amoag a number of horses * that are to be offered at auction in Christ- 1 church on March 30. • . ■ ■ < The lists of winning riders cannot he i made complete at present, details of a num- ' ber of Auckland country meetings having < still to come, but practically correct figures ? are available for most of. the leading . jockeys. The Taranaki horseman, H. Gray, heads the list at present, but Oliver is catch- ■' ing him, and. J. Beale and W. Ryan are i equnl, third. Competition anions cross- , country riders is very keen, H. Hetford. T. Pritchard and A. Julian each having eleven ' wins, and J. CKConnell nine. ■ 1 The imported mare Ringdove, who has j been retired from the turf by the Stead . Bros., is to" be mated during the coming season, with Boniform. This should prove ■ a good combination. Mr H. Tinker has purchased Colleen Mary, by San Fran—Mongonui, and she has been placed in J. A. McGulnuess' hands to be prepared for-coming events. This mare hae an attractive pedigree, her dam being by Carbine, from Moonga. Broadsword is doing good work on the tract just now, and should ran well at the coming meeting. Miss Mischief, who recently returned from Auckland, where she had to stay since the summer meeting through meeting with an accident there, has been turned ont at Mr D. G. Greenwood's property .at Ilam. / G. Pine Is now quartered at Riccarton with' Count Witte. . It is doubtful if the big son of Mensehikoff—Problem will survive a pre-paration. Still, now that the "winter ie coming on. the going may becipected to keep soft, and It will be greatly in his favour. Taskmaster is being spelled. Ploughshare, another member of the Chokebore team, has not been on the track for' a' few days, and is understood to be suffering from a poisoned leg. Harry Ellis, formerly private trainer to Sir Geo. McLean, has shifted into the stabley vacated by J. MoCombe, and has Peridot and Erskine in hand. ■■ Pure Gold Is the name selected for the Gold Reef colt that McCombe bought at Pa.lmerston North.
