LAWN TENNIS.
The Easter Holidays are causing a geni eral exodus of players from Auckland. f The Hamilton tournament has become a : i recognised Easter outing for town playi I ers, and a large number have entered 1 from Auckland. Besides these, players - taking part represent Kawhia, Taranaki, I and Wellington. Hawkins, the Welling- ' ton crack handicap player, has entered ; for the various events, and the meeting lof the Wellington!an with A. J. Black, '- who won the championship last year, and who will defend his title, will bring into ! contact two players of very similar • styles, and the match should be a close ! ■ one, the chances being in favour of Haw- ! : kins. 1 • The Wanganui tournament will be at- I tended by several Auckland players. i Morpeth, Snelling, and H. Snelling make 1 the trip down the Wanganui River, leav- ! ing to-night. The Parnell Club gave an "At Home" '• last week, to which representatives fron--1 the B Grade players of the various clubs ! were invited. The afternoon 'was a splendid one for tennis, and the gathering was • a huge success. I The West End Club are well in w+th 1 their club matches. In the Men's Cham- > pionship final, Keith plays Morpeth; 1 Handicap Singles final, Olipliant plays ■ Morpeth: Handicap Doubles, MeN-air v. I Gittos. In the Ladies' Handicap Singles, i Miss Gray plays Miss Morpeth; in the i ! Ladies' Championship Singles, Miss Gray •is the winner. In the combined ev-ents 1 several matches remaiu to be played. At Eden and Epsom, Shrrriffs put up a good performance in defeating Grossmann | after o hard sets, arid is now in tie final, i He plays the winner of Dr. Keith and C. Heather. Prouse brought off a surprise in defeating Fisher in the "Manawatu Champion--1 ship, 9—4. The best of 13 games is hard- ' ly a usual contest for championship hon- j 5 ours, and had three or five sets been 1 played the result mitfht have been differ--1 out. Prouse, however, put up a good fight against Peacock lately, and his defeat of Fisher entitles him to be classed as one '. of the colony's leading players. \ The team to represent 'the Auckland • University College at Christehurch iv the ' Inter-Varsity Championships, to be held j on 25th, 26th and 28th prbx., leuve to-day. The team is not a strong ont. and it is not expected to make a great showing. ' The College, however, looks at the event I in a sporting spirit, and -sends a -full team away. The team comprises Messrs. B. H. Wyman, Campbell, Scotfc. and Jacob- I sen, and Misses McElwain, McLaughlin, Western, and Hay. Some dispute seems to have arisen as to the course adopted by the Auckland Club in using a net with the canvas j about 5 inches wider than the accustomed 1 size. Comment was made by the visiting j players in the Inter-Club matches from time to time, but no action was taken. ' To players accustomed to the ordinary I canvas, the innovation at first is a dis- ! advantage, and tub all tim£s is a disadvan--1 tage, in that a player cannot see the line? on the court on the other side. 1 The challenge round to be played between the Auckland and Remuera Clubs ! was postponed last Saturday owing to \ some delay in notification. The match will be played after" Easier. ' . " 5 : —
