PHILADELPHIA RIOTS.
DUE TO CORRUPTION. A THOUSAND CASUALTIES. WOMEN AND THE MILITIA. (By Cable—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 8.5 a.m.) LONDON, February 24. The "London Times" Washington correspondent states that the Philadelphia strike is attributable to political corruption. The Republican macjdne in the city is a by-word for dishonesty, particularly in connection with the tramways. A total of 750 cars has been destroyed. The total casualties number 1000. Dead and dying number 12, and the seriously injured 91, including 31 policemen. One car depot was ds'namited. Militia were posted along the streets at twenty yard intervals to preserve order, but this proved a fiasco. Women stuck tins on the points of the bayonets, and cut off the militiamen's buttons as souvenirs. The gaols a.re overcrowded, and business k paralysed. The trials of the prisoners have begun, and sentences rangi Jng from two to six years imposed.
