(By Telegraph.Press Association.) ' EIRE BRIGADES' CONFERENCE.
HASTINGS, this day. The Fire Brigades' Conference was resumed this morning, when it was visited by the Hon. Mr. Buddo and Mr. Vigor Brown. The Minister briefly responded to a most enthusiastic welcome, dealing sympathetically with the work of the firemen. He expressed great appreciation at the interest displayed, praised the work done, and urged better provision for recreation at fire, stations. He thought some method should be adopted whereby young firemen could earn promotion to the highest positions. The Minister has been invited to attend the banquet on Thursday. - •
OAMARU HARBOUR. I OAMARU, this day. Mr. R. Milligan was to-day unanimously re-elected chairman of the Harbour Board. The annual report disclosed a further increase in the trade of the port as regards exports, and practically no difference in the quantity of imports, the cause alleged being the continuance of cheap differential railage rates by the Railway Department. Reference was also made in the report of the scheme now in progress to bring about a settlement of the 1879 loan of £100,000, the total liability in respect of which now stands at £202,000.
