TORTURING COWS.

MAORI SENT TO GAOL. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. A Maori at Waipiro was sentenced by Mr. Barton, S.M., to three months' imprisonment for torturing a cow. Accused had been employed milking cows by a settler, and was discharged on account of his dirty habits.' Shortly afterwards the settler found three of bis cows *Sick, and subsequently obtained an admission from the Maori that he had put match-heads up the cows' teats by way of revenge, with the result that one died, and two others are still very ill.
