WHANGAREI RAILWAY EXTENSION.

WHANGAREI, this day.
The repeated representations of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce to have the railway line opened from Hukerenui to Towai have at last met with a measure of success, the secretary (Mr. J. Mackie)' having received the following communication from Mr. H. J. H-oaEUow, Under-Secretary to the Works Department:—"l am directed by the Minister of Public Works to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 27th u!t., enquiring when the above section of railway will be handed over to the Railway Department. In reply, 1 am to state that the Railway Department is not yet prepared to take over the section referred to, but, in the meantime, arrangement's have been made with that Department to work a passenger and goods traffic on three days per week, to meet the steamer and trains at Hukerenui, namely, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, it is anticipated that this will meet the wants of the public for the time being."!
