At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council, the Finance Committee reported that the district fund debit was £16,165 7/6, including accounts presented for payment, £741 10/8. The Fire Council recommenced that a tire-motor be secured for the use of the brigade. The Recreation Committee reported that the work of completing the uiunlcipal baths was now In hand. The sanitary inspector reported one case of enteric and one case of scarlet fever within the borough- Declarations, covering the purchase of 7560 ozs. gold within the borough, were received. A report was received from .Inspector Franklin, Making certain recommendations regarding the -recent outbreak of dysentery at the Borough Sanitary Depot. Sixteen applications were received in connection with the position of cadet to the Council, rendered vacant by the resignation of Master F. Slevin. Master Mcßae was appointed to fill the vacancy. The Council meeting resolved to proceed with the completion of Beach-road, leading to Waihi's -health resort. A debate took place on the question of the contract system v. co-opera-tive work, and it was resolved by 6 to 4 that the latter be adopted. Councillor Power's motion, "That the Engineer have full charge of all workers in the Borough, and sole right to dismiss or engage men," was carried by 9 to 1. A large gathering of railway men, assembled at the local station last night to bid farewell to Mr. W. I. Hessell, stationmaster, who has been transferred to Huntly. Mr. .W. Bond (clerk), on behalf of the combined Waihi staff, handed him a present -which consisted of a handsome set of pipes and mounted tobacco pouch, which, the recipient suitably acknowledged. PAEROA, Friday. An alarm parade of the No. 1 Ohlnemuri Rifles was held about half-past seven last night. The members of the company did not know what day or what time the alarm would be given, but within a-quarter of an hour after the alarm was given, about three-quarters of the company, under Captain Dean and Lieutenant. Andrews, had fallen in at the Drill Shed. Captain Dean reported at the parade last night that he had received word from the managers of the Karangahake mines, stating their willingness to allow the volunteers employed by them away on the Kitchener Camp at the end of the month.
