A BARQUE ON FIRE.
IN SYDNEY HARBOTJR. THE OTJTBREAR CHECKED. SYDNEY, February 11. The barque. Penrhyn Castle took fire down the bay to-day. She arrived from London during the week, and, fartunately, completed the discharge of 2,000 packages of powder yesterday. The fire started in the fore-hold among a quantity of pottery and other cargo loosely packed in straw, and quickly gained such headway that it was decided to tow the Penrhyn Castle into Rose Bay and beach her. A steamer started to tow the burning vessel, and meanwhile holes were cut in her decks. The firefloat Pluvius arrived, and so effectively poured in water that by the time the tow had reached Shark Island the fire was checked, the barque anchored, and the firemen soon mastered the outbreak. There is a large quantity of water in the holds. The full extent of the damage by fire and water will be unknown until the vessel is pumped out and the damaged cargo discharged.
