(From Our Own Correspondent) CAMBRIDGE. Saturday. The Cambridge Borough Council met last evening ln the new chamber adjoining the Town Hall. There were present the Mayor (Mr Bkicklasnd)„ Messrs HIM, Dickenson, Lewis, Richards, Ferguson, Tudehope, and Underwood. Before commencing the business, Ills Worship congratulated the Councillors and, burgesses on having such a fine Town Ilall and Municipal Chamber. He was pleased to be Mayor, and see the consummation of his scheme. He had made a town out of a people -who bad previously not been used to sanitation, clean water, or anything else. Arrangements had been made to meet the newly-elected Library Committee, and discuss the matter of taking over the property for the Carnegie Library, The Oddfellows' Sports Committee applied for a grant towards expenses they had incurred ln preparing the recreation reserve for their sports. It was resolved to grant £1 8/. It woe resolved to form Wil-son-street and level the footpaths, if the funds will allow of its being done out of the Streets Improvement Loan. It was resolved to erect a post and wire fence round the Town Hall and Municipal Buildings. The district fund showed an overdraft of £1876 17/4 at date, and £370 of accounts to pay. It was decided to grant the town baDd the use of the Town Hall for concert, free of cost, except gas and actual costs out of pocket. Dr. Purdy was thanked for the services he had rendered the borough, and he -was congratulated upon his appointment as chief officer of health In Tasmania. Councillor Underwood had applied to be allowed to surrender his lease of certain borough endowments. The matter had been referred to the Finance Committee, and, in accordance with their recommendation, the request was refused. The, statutory halfhol'day was fixed for Wednesday, as heretoforts. It was decided to try and get the Government to allow an auctioneer's license to be Issued for the borough and a radius of five miles round it at a reduced price. Several firms have tried the business ln Cambridge during the past twenty years, but they all found there was not sufficient to warrant them paying £40 per annum, unless they sold stock in a large way.
