Drs. H. Walton, Smith and J. CrKeefe, of Sydney, who arrived by the Wlmmera on Sunday, are at present guest's at the Star Hotel, prior to a visit to the thermal district. Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, a Dunedin solicitor, has been appointed to the Magistracy. He will leave Dunedin shortly to take up duties ai Hokitika.— (Press Association.) Among the guest 3at present at the Central Hotel are Mr. and Mrs. John G. Cobbe, of Feilding; E. W. Ackland and S. T. Gillman, of Dunedin; and W. Sandtman, of Napier. The Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister for Education, visited Rangiora yesterday, states a Press Association wire from Christchurch, and inspected some of the schools there. He left for tne North by last night's boat. Mr. H. T. Gillies, of the law firm-of Gillies and Gilfillan, has been appointed Crown Solicitor for the Hamilton circuit of the Supreme Court, and will appear as sucK at the opening of t-he sittings at Hamilton on "the 28th inst. Mr. A. Holland (late of G.P.0.), with his wife and two. daughters (Misses Nellie and Elsie), is returning to Auckland after an absence of over twelve months. They cc-me by the RM.s. lonic, which, left London on February 3rd. Mr. H. Brett will leave Sydney on Saturday by the P. and O. steamer Malwa, which is expected to arrive here on Wednesday morning early. The committee entrusted with the arrangements for the presentation proposed to be made have arranged for the function to take place on Thursday, the 17th inst. Mr. F. T. Woodmass, late of Wellington and Levin, has been appointed bandmaster of the newly-formed band at Taumarunui, and commences, his duties this week. Mr. F. Woodmass is a relation of Sir. Tuxford-Woodmass,. of Feilding.
Messrs. A. Beaver and T. W. Fisher, of Wellington; A. Johnson, E." Driver, and. Frank Haig, of Dunedin; C. Morrison;-, ot Christchurch; G. S. Avem and G. Wise, of Sydney; and W. Dyer Jamieson, oi Melbourne; are at present stopping at the Star Hotel. : It is probable that -Mr. Hall Came. the novelist, will pay a visit to Australia and -New Zealand in 1911. He ii at present negotiating with the Manx Society' in Melbourne, with a view of conducting a lecturing tour in the Australasian dominions. Mr. William Callender, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand;- who' leaves this week on a visit to America and Enrope, was the recipient of a case of pipes from the members of the Lower Hutt Bowling Club on Saturday afternoon on the green. The Hon. T. Mackenzie, ifinister in charge of Tourist Resorts, visited Lake Brunner. and the Rotomanu settlement yesterday. He proceeded to Westport at night, and will return to Grejrnouth.' on Thursday, where he. wi'l be entertained at a banquet.—(Press Association.) Mr. W. B. Scandrett, of Invercargill, is on a visit to Auckland. He leaves for the Thames to-morrow, will spend a few days at Te Aroha, and returns South by the Wanganui Biver from Taumarunui:' He 13 staying with Mr. Fred Lambourne, Graf ton-road, who was a fellowapprentice in London over 50 years ago, their friendship having extended practically over »■ life-time.
Mr. J. J. O'Brien and Mrs. O'Brien, who are about to leave on a visit to Europe, were entertained at Devonport last evening by a number of the parishioners of the local Roman Catholic Church. Rev. Father Furlong, on behalf of the friends, presented Mr. and Mrs. O'Brien with two dressing cases, and wished the recipients a prosperous voyage to the Old Country. air. OT3fien made a feeling reply, and said both himself and his looked forward to spending many happy years ia the future in Devonport. Songs and recitations were contributed by a number of ladies and gentlemen, and a very pleasant evening was spent.
A pretty wedding -was celebrated at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Pbnsooby, yesterday, Mr. Henry McCoy and Miss Ellen Casey (fourth daughter of Mr. Maurice Casey) being joined in matrimony. The church, was crowded with friends of the happy couple, the Rev. Father Edge, assisted by the Rev. Father Doyle, officiating. During the' service Miss Annie Lorrigan sang aa "Aye Maria," and Miss Maud Anderson presided at the organ, and as the party left the church the orchestra played the Wedding March." Among the large number of presents was a handsome silver eptrgne, presented by the choir, of which The newly-wedded pair were leading members. c
Dr. Purdy, who left Auckland last week to take up his new duties as chief health officer of Tasmania, was-the subject of eulogistic remarks by the Parnell 'Council last evening. Mr. F. Fits, after speaking of the unvarying courtesy of the doctor, and the keen interest-he ahravs manifested in anything that pertained to the health either of the community or of the individual, moved: "That this Council places on record its high appreciation- of the efficient manner in' Which ' Dr. Purdy carried out his onerous, duties as health officer in the Auckland district, and whilst congratulating him upon bis important appointment.. as chief health! officer by the Government of Tasmania, regrets the loss of hie valuable services." ' Several councillors warmly endorsed the remarks of the mover, and the resolution, was carried unanimously, the Town Clerk being instructed to forward a copy of It - to the doctor. ■ ■" -
