DEATH BY SHOOTING.

AN OPEN VERDICT. A death as the result of a gun-shot wound is reported from Maungatawhiri, the victim being a man named J. C. Scott. It was supposed at first that the case was one of suicide, but at the inquest held to-day the jury returned a verdict that there was not sufficient evidence to show whether the injuries which caused death were self-inflicted or otherwise. Scott was a stranger in the district, having arrived there from Auckland only on Sunday last. He was employed as a farm hand.
