THEIR POUND OF FLESH.
MEAT TRUSTS' METHODS. HUGE STORES IN THE COOLERS. LONDON, February 7. The New York correspondent of the "Daily Chronicle," referring to the meat boycott in America, reports that official returns show that there are £000,000,000 worth of food in the various trusts' cold stores, including 14,000,000 carcases of cattle, 25,000,000 sheep. 50.000,000 pigs, and £5.000,000 worth of fish for the Lenten season. The cost of food, therefore, is not due to scarcity. The "Chronicle" adds that despite the increase in railway receipts and other signs of prosperity, American financial circles are thoroughly unsettled by the Government's attitude towards the trusts, and that the value of the stock of 32 railways and 29 industrial combinations has depreciated to the extent of £207,000,000 in six months, owing to the fear that the trusts will be prosecuted.
