Regarding the leasing by tbe Pacific" Cable Board of the telegraph line-from Montreal to Bamficld, recently reported in the cable news, Sir Joseph Ward saya . he had given instructions to the High Commissioner, who was the representative of New Zealand on the Pacific Cabls Board, to agree to the leasing of an overland Canadian line for a period of five years, for the sum of £11,000 _ltf annum. This will enable the boardshave exclusive use of the overland into Bamifield, the Canadian-Pacific Company supplying and maintaining a 2101b per mile copper wire; and also grantreg office accommodation for the Pacific Cable Board's staff at Montreal and at all Pacific Board repeating stations. Thi* arrangement, said the Prime Minister, extended the Pacific caible practically from New Zealand to the Atlantic,;and was to be done for the Pacific to secure its own service across the -At" lantio ocean. Recently he had mad* strong representations to that end to the British Frime Minister, the Post-master-General, and other Ministers, aa well as to the Prime Minister of Can ada, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, and he was | looking forward with confidence to seem" the consummation of his hopes in that direction. The arrangement just completed was, in his opinion, a distinci move forward.
