SWIMMING.

HARBOUR SWIMMING RACE. There was splendid weathsr for the Ponsonby Swimming Club's second annual harbour race, and one of the largest crowds that ever gathered on Shelly Beach witnessed the race of the season. The City Band was in attendance, and a good afternoon's enjoyment was provided. Owing to the extra expense of getting up the harbour race, the Club decided to take up a collection to assist in defraying the charges, the collectors being Misses Macdonald, Walker, Piper. Wykes, Charles aud Westcn. The race started from the Northcote Ferry wharf, Che goal being Shelly Beach. The iirst prize .was a trophy, value £5, presented by Messrs J. W. Griggs and S. Atkin, aud a handsome challenge shield, valued at £10, was also presented by the WaiWai Mineral Water Company, the winner to hold it for a year. The second prize was valued at £2 10/, and the third prize at a guinea. Thirty-four competitors entered, and all but three started. The wind and the tide were favourable to the swimmers, with a result that the finishing times were better than last year. The first three w-sre: — H. Sing, llm 30s, 1: time, 42m 22 l-5s D. Pugh, 7m, 2; time, 43m 14 3-ss. G. Crook, Sin 30s, 3; time, 43m 44 4-ss. Tlie others of the first ten came in as follows:—S. W. Kean, 3m 30s, 4; EL Stein, Om 30s, 5; H. Baxter, 5m 30s, 6; S. Francis, Cm 30s, 7; F. Baker, sm, 8; B. T. Duffey, sm, 0; L. Frlstrom, urn, 10. The greasy pig contest provided plenty of excitement, but the prize, which was the pig, was gained by no one, owing to all the compctitois being disqualified for disregarding the rules. SWIMMING CHAJiLPIOiNBHIPS. MELBOURNE, February 6. The 440 yds swimming championsip resulted: Beaurepaire 1, Hardwick ? Mason 3. Beaurepaire won by 18yds. Time, 5m 36 l-ss. Tlie 220 yds breaststroke championship resulter: Richardson 1, Finney 2, Ruston 3. All the placed men are Victorians. Richardson won by 3ft. Time, 3m lCd.
