PEERS AND PROLETARIAT.
The pathetic figures which, certain peers of the "Lord Knows Who" variety are cutting on public platforms during the present electoral campaign in the OldCountry has moved "Punch" to mirth. In the current issue of that journal is the following amusing and by no means exaggerated description of a "Bockwoodsman " peer attempting to address the enlightened electors at the present time: —
"Ladies and Gentleman, — (Hooray)—l have come here to-night—('"Oo stole the common from the people?")— That was a long time ago; I'm not going to speak about that now—("Well, we're going to") —A man is not responsible for what his ancestors may have done—("lf it wasn't for your ancestors you wouldn't be a hearl,')—That's nothing to do with it— (" Yes it 'as; don't be so ungrateful")— Are you going to listen to mc? I've got my back to the waJl— (" Welbottle, 'c m«ua'<X -*"Bum tit, afll Zffl»-
(" Naughty!")— Ladies and Gentlemen,
—(" That's light, Hughie, dorft mind the horrid men. You begin all over again, dearie.") —I only ask for fair play— ("Did you give the Budget fair play?")— Yea, we did—("Oh, Percival, 'ow ea* you? And on your birthday, too!")— Look here, do you think I want to talk -to you?—("Do you we /mint to listen to you?")— Evidently you don't.— • *"0w bright little Stanley's getting.")— Very -well, you needn't then.—"That's right, ducky; you get along to ted; Perkins will bring your tea up in the morn-fog-")—Bnt I'm just going to say one thing; if your beastly Radical gets in, an* the Germans come, don't ask mc to d*fend you."—('"Ow, mercy, mercy 1"),...-..
