POLICE COURT.
(Before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M.) THE DRUNKARDS. William Wilton is usually a sea-going fireman, but when he is ashore he is mostly drinking or drunk. Just now he ha 3no ship, and no money to speak of, and nowhere to sleep except in the parks. "A drinking loaier," the Magistrate called him, and although he was charged with mere drunkenness, he was remanded until Monday, the Magistrate suggesting that meantime the police might fetl disposed to charge him with another offence. Two first offenders, both apparently decent fellows, were fined 5/. INDECENCY. James Patterson Lauder went into the park yesterday when he was drunk, and was observed by an official to commit an indecent act. He was sent to gaol for 14 days. ALLEGED ASSAULT. Two brothers, Thomas and Andrew Butler, were charged with having assaulted each other. These two men, it was alleged, had a fight in the back yard of a house in Bandolph-street, occupied by their sister, Mrs. Brown, and it was said also that the language used by the two men was of the vilest. They were convicted, and fined £2 each, and ordered to pay 14/ costs, in default 14 days. William Stirling admitted having assaulted Patrick Bedford, but pleaded justification. The other story was that Bedford had offered Stirling absolutely no justification whatever. His Worship decided to hear all the evidence, ana permitted defendant to withdraw his plea of guilty. After he had heard the evidence, his Worship decided to dismiss the information. VAGRANCY. John Grey Cummings pleaded guilty to a charge of procuring liquor while prohibited, but he denied that he was a rogue and a vagabond. He was charged with vagrancy, on the ground that he sought to obtain money from foot passengers in Symonds-etreet by begging. He was remanded for a week.
