A SMART RUSE.
Many years ago, when Sir Thomas Lipton was but a smart shopkeeper ia Glasgow, he one night observed a man tampering with a shop door. He went forward quickly, and, pointing an omin-ous-looking object at the fellow's breast, said sharply: "Up with your hands, or I fire." The man was terrified, and at once flung up his 'hands. "Now," said Sir Thomas, "you'll come with mc to the police station. If you attempt to run away I'll fire." The man went quietly to the police station, where his guilt was proved by the discovery of housebreaking tools on his person- When Sir Thomas had explained how he effected the capture, the police officer said: "Have you a license for carrying firearms?" "No," was the reply. "Humph!" said the policeman, "let mc see the revolver." "Certainly," said Lipton; "here it is." And he drew from his pocket—a pipe-case!
