A DOG'S SAGACITY.
CHECKS AN OUTBREAK OF FIRE. Tho housekeeper at the Roman Catholic Presbytery at Pukekohe was aroused at. a quarter to one this morning by a spaniel jumping on to her bed and licking her face. Upon awakening, she at once became aware that the loom was full <>f smoke, and immediately she communicated the alarm to Fathers McMillan nnd Lynch, who were in the house, a nil a rapid investigation disclosed that the wall-paper and curtains near the dining-room window were ablaze. The outbreak was soon extinguished, and this morning search for its reason resulted in the discovery of a man's footprints outside the window, which had been left a few inches oper. the night before. The fire was evidently caused by this nocturnal visitor, who either by design or while investigating at the window for some presumedly illegal purpose, set the curtain on fire. The police were communicated with, and are making inquiries. The damage, which is not estimated at more than £5 or £6, is covered by a policy in the South British Office.
