The claim against the Minister for Works by the Marlborough Cement Company for £2500 for acquisition by the Government of Taita Island, Golden Bay, the property c' the company, was heard at the Compensation Court this morning. The court ordered respondent to pay claimant £1400 in full satisfaction of claim, with £94 11/ costs. EAHJWAY APPEAL, BOARD. NAPIER, this day. A sitting of the Railway Appeal Board was held here to-day to hear evidence In the appeal of Henry G-oldsmith, carpenter, against the decision of the Department withholding an increase of pay. The evidence of the workshops foreman and senior hands indicated that appellant's methods were slow and leisurely, and he failed to show that interest in lis work which warranted an increase in wages. Alter consultation the chairman (Dr. McArthur) announced that the Board was unanimous in dismissing the appeal. A CLEAN SHEET. INVERCARGILL, this day. Several cases of alleged cruelty to horses were heard before Mr. V. G. Day, S.M. The police prosecuted in each case. Mr. W. H. Zouch (of Christchurch), Inspector for the Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was the chief witness. Pines were inflicted as follow: —Stephen Ryan, £5; Henry Vestenscoe 40/-j Alexander Knox Reddecliffe, 20/-; and John McLauchlin, 40/-; with costs against each defendant. MISCELLANEOUS. WELLINGTON, this day. At the Supreme Court to-day Charles Kruse was sentenced to six months for theft. FEILDING, this day. Mr. O. C. Pleasants, Liberal candidate for the Oroua seat at the last election, •has been presented with a purse of sovereigns subscribed by the (Liberals of the district.
