LIGHT-WEIGHT BREAD.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l should like to know if any law exists in New Zealand to prevent bakers selling light-weight bread! and if such a law exists, why is it not enforced? I know from personal- test that some bakers' 'bread is hardly ever up to weight. The present price "charged is very high, viz., 4d. for a 21b. loaf, and when you find such loaf averages about ljozs. under weight it seems hardly fair to the consumer. In England all bread is sold by weight, under a heavy penalty. In Australia, I believe, the fine is 1/- per oz. for light weight. A hotelkeeper committing an offence against the law is punished without gaol. Evidently we have officers to look after the drink traffic Why should not food also come under proper control?—l am, etc., LIGHT-WEIGHT.
