SPEECH BY SIR J. G. WARD.
AT MR. HALL-JONES' RECEPTION. LONDON, July 28. At Mr. Hall-Jones' reception to Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, at the Westminster Palace Hotel, the guests included Sir Montague and Lady Nelson, Mr. X. Kennedy Macdonald and Mrs. Macdonald, j Colonel and Miss Davies, Dr. F. Fitchett, I Vice-Admiral Sir Wilmot Fawkes, Sir | Walter Kennaway, Lady Vogel, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Reeves, Hon. R. Oliver, exM.L.C., General Robley, Mr. William Preece, and many others. Sir Joseph Ward, in response to his welcome, said the Defence Conference was concerned not with the defence of England, but of the Empire as a whole, and the delegates wished to co-operate in making Imperial defence bigger, better, and more indestructible than at present. In the course of an interview yesterday, Sir Joseph Ward declared that the Defence Conference was .bound to stand out beyond anything that could be treated academically. Hβ did not wish to undervalue or underrate the work of the Premiers , Conferencet, but not much of a practical nature had bees achieved by ,«*» -:- *J
