THE OXFORD MATCH.
AUSTRALIANS- SCORE- 847. ! GILBERT, SEVEN WICKETS FOR <By Cable.—Press Association.-^Copyright.) (Received 9.25 a.m.) ; LONDON, May 24. _ The Australian Eleven commenced its sixth match to-day, meeting Oxford University at Oxford. The Oxford team consisted of C. S. Hurst, J. C. M. Lowe, M-' G. Salter, Lees, Evans, C. V. Hooman, Ligden, R. L. Rob~ inson, rCartwright, H. A. Gilbert, and A. G. Pawson. Cotter, Carter, O'Connor, McAlister, and Layer stood out of the Australian eleven. Noble won the toss, and the weather being fine, and the wicket fast, decided to bat first. The attendance during the day was moderate. Bardsley and Hopkins opened for Australia. Hopkins did not stay long, and after scoring five was caught by Ligden off Lowe. Noble followed, but soon lost Bardsley, clean bowled after making 14, the total then being 78, Noble being top-scorer. Ransford joined his skipper, and played fine cricket, until Gilbert made a brilliant catch off his own bowling, and 6ent the left-handed back to the pavilion. Gregory, who filled the gap, had a merry time at the expense of the bowlers. He passed the half-century before being caught off Gilbert. Most of his runs came from crisp, clean drives along the carpet. The total was 194 when he left. After his departure Noble was caught for 107. Armstrong played well for 23, but the rest of the side was disposed of in short order by Gilbert. Noble played a brilliant, all-round game. He gave a chance at the wicket off Cartwright when 35, but this was his only faulty stroke. He hit thirteen fours, and was at the wickets for 140 minutes. The Australians' first century took exactly 100 minutes to compile, but the second, was raised 60 minutes later. Robinson had the misfortune to strain his side while bowling. In the half-hour that remained the Oxonians -scored 24 without loss before stumps were drawn. The feature of the day's play was Gilbert's splendid work with the ball. He captured eight wickets at a cost of a lit- ■ tie under nine runs apiece, including two | catches off his own bowling. AUSTRALIA.—First Innings. W. Bardsley, b Lowe 14 A. J.
