WHANGAREI SPORTS.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Monday. Empire Day was observed as a public holiday. The sports programme promoted by the Whangarei Rugby Union was held at Kensington Park, before a good attendance, although Intermittent showers somewhat interfered with the proceedings. The sports commenced with a fancy costume parade, which, headed by the Whangarei Brass Band, marched to the Park, causing considerable amusement- The first prize for fancy costume was awarded jointly to Masters R. Galbraitb and R. Cambey, for impersonation of a Maori and wahine. Results of the various events axe as follows:— 100 yds Maiden Handicap.—W. Forsyth, sJyds, 1; A. Martin, 2yds, 2. Won easily. Time, lljs. Five started. Footballers" Handicap, 200 yds.—L. Storey, 18yds, 1; J. Penny, 13yds, 2. Won by 3yds, In 235. Six started. Relay Race, one mile. —Three teams entered, South Ward securing first place and North Ward second. The winning team were: J. Woods, K. Storey, T. Slssons, and J. Richardson. Open Handicap, 150yds.—W. Forsyth, 13yds, 1; J. Penny, 7yds, 2. Time, 15s. Ten started. High School Boys' Handicap, 100 yds.—A. McGregor, scratch, 1; H. Parker, 5 2-3 yds, 2. Time, 13s. Won by ljyds. Six started. Handicap Hurdles, 120 yds.—L. Storey, 12yds, 1; W. Tucker, scratch, and Hotson 2yds, tied for second place. Won easily. Time, 17s. Nine starters. Public School Boys' Rate G. Duncan, scratch, 1; Boy Cambey, 2. Time, 12*s. Bandsmen's Race, 75yds, in full uniform. —W. Dick, 6Jyds, 1; E. Rye, Byds, 2. Time, 9s. Drop-kick.—T. Palmer 1. Place-kick.—A. Robertshaw 1. Old Men's Race, 75yds.—A. McGregor. 1; Arnott and Symonds tied for second place. Eight started. School Girls' Race, 75yds.—D. Campie, 1; Audrey McGregor, 2. 5-ialle Race, from the Kamo Springs Hotel to and once round 'the course. ' Recent rains made the going very heavy, but a most exciting finish was provided. Eleven competitors started, but only six finished the full distance. H. Forsyth collapsed near home. H. Raynor was the first to breast the tape, sprinting in in great'style amidst cheers. He was closely followed by R. Lord, and W. Forsyth arrived soon after. The sealed handicap altered the result to: W. Forsyth, 4im, 1; H. Rayndr, scratch, 2; R. Lord, scratch, 3. The actual running time was: —Raynor, 27m 10s; Lord, 27m 40s; W. Forsyth, 29m 355. A. E. Hoey, F. Galbralth. and L. Garry also completed the distance in the order-'hamed. The valuable trophies for this race were presented by Mr. H. Bray. The Whangarei Rugby Union is to be congratulated on the success of this meeting, especially the secretary (Mr. S. McGill) and the following officials: —Messrs. A. R. Crane and W. A. Parker (judges), J. Johnstone (starter), and B. Cambie, L. Clarke, and D. Lovelock (handicappers). All the officers of the W.R.U. worked hard to bring about a successful result.
