ON THE GOODWIN SANDS.
INDIAN TRADER "WRECKED. LONDON, April 12. The steamer Mahratta, 3697 tons, from Calcutta, grounded on the Goodwin Sands, on the east coast of Kent, yesterday. The lifeboats took the passengers off safely, but while boatmen were salving the cargo of rubber, tea, and rice, the back of the vessel broke, and the salvers and crew were rescued with difficulty.
The engineers worked up to their waists in water until the danger of explosion was passed.
The vessel and cargo were valued at £200,000.
