FIRE ON THE MAORI. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.)-* I Sunday. (> An- outbreak of ffre on the Union Company's turbine steamer Maori'during" the passage from Lyttelton to Wellington early on' Friday morning caused a mild sensation among the passengers. At 2 o'ejbek lighted cinder from one of the vessel's funnels set fire to a stack of about 400 lifebelts which l Were stowed lon the top deck aft. Word quickly passed to the deck hands, and- the blazing lifebelts, numbering a dozen or thereabouts, were thrown overboard. Water was played on the pile, and in a few minutes, excepting a strong smell of burnt lifebelt cork, all trace of fire had disappeared. About 400 lifebelts were slightly damaged wth water, arid oxcepting those thrown overboardj no other damage resulted. The piles of lifebelts stowed- on the after deck constituted the extra equipment for' the" additional, p"asseriger traffic during the faster holidays.
