• The members of the Auckland Flying Club flew the third young bird race of the season from Te A-wamutu, a distance Of 81 miles airline, on Saturday last. Seventy-five birds, representing 16 lofts, were liberated at 12 o'clock in a steady north-west breezel The winners were:— Mr. H. Stowell's (bl eh c A.FjC. 481) Potaka, 1, velocity 938 yds a minute; Mr. H. E. WiddoWs (bl eh c A.F.C. 1201) 2, velocity 935.8 yds a minute; Mr. E. Preston's (bl eh c A.F.Q. 1312) Naomi 3, velocity 935.1 yds a minute. An old-age pensioner named Angus Doran, who died in the Old Men's Home, Whangarei, •on Saturday, at the age of 81, was born of French-Canadian parents, arid took part in the American Civil War, being present at the fall of RichI mond. Coming to New Zealand in the early day 3, he became naturalised, and spent many years on the gumflelds and among the Maoris, among whom he was a well-known figure.
