RESCUING THE MAILS.

EXCITING EXPERIENCE NEAR ATHENREZ. (By Telegrapb.-~Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. An exciting experience rescuing mails during the recent flood is reported from Athenxee. It appears that the mail coach left Wafhi for Tauranga with five passengers and five cwt. of mails. When near Athenree a tremendous land slip occurred a few yards in front of the coach, completely blocking the road Crimmins (the driver) went to the residence of the Rev. Mr Salters, at Athenree. for assistance, and amid torrents of rain a rescue party was formed. It was found that two bridges had been washed away and that flood water submerged the country everywhere.

The driver of the coach attempted to turn back, but found another big slip behind. The horses were then turned loose, and the rescue party, shouldering the mails, commenced to tramp two miles, negotiating rivers and rushing torrents, with no bridges en route. They eventually reached Athenree with the aid of a settler's trap; .later, assistance! came from and the journey was completed to Tauranga.

There is urgent necessity of telephonic communication between Waihi and Athenree. Katikati settlers have been agitating for some time without result.
