Fishing in the Rakaia River about a mile from the mouth some days ago, Mr. W. D. Lawrence caugh a genuine Californian salmon, weighing sJlb. This is stated to be the first fish of its species caught here with a rod and line that has been scientifically identified, although many people have claimed to have caught this variety. The fish wa3 identified by Dr. B. M. Moorhouse as a Californian salmon, and his opinion was confirmed by Mr. E. R. Waite, of Christchurch Museum. Several of the salmon have, of course, been caught in the net. but it is suggested that perhaps the fish will alter their ha-bits in a new country and afford, sport to anglers.
