ras marrAii attack on conSTABLE MAHEB. (To the Bdftor.l Sir,—The entire community has been pained and shocked by the tale ot Convict McLean's brutality to Constable Maher. Would it not he right and proper to make some public recognition oi the constable's brave and praiseworthy conduct in the performance of a most difficult and dangerous task in the. public interests, and evidently prompted only' by a sense of duty? li is well known tkat our persons and property are largely secured by the courage and efficiency- of the police, and it appears to mc only right that the pub- ' lie, on an occasion such as this, should show its appreciation of the conduct of a public officer who fearlessly does . his duty as Maher has done. Should not tie authorities be approached with the view of obtaining , permission for the provision of a suit- 1 able recognition of this man's conspicuous bravery?^—l am, etc., J ■_____. CAUGHEY. !
