ANXIETY IN FRANCE.
MODIFYING THE TREATY. LONDON, October 10. Great anxiety was exhibited in Paris on Friday, owing to th e strained relations between Austria and Servia, the only encouraging item of news being Greece's hesitation to respond forthwith to tho Cretans' demand for union, preferring to submit their wishes through the proper channels. 'It is semi-officially asserted that Britain, Franc*, and Russia have assured the Porte that they consider any modifi- | cations in the Treaty of Berlin require ithe assent of all the contracting Powers. Italy concurs so far as matters of principle are concerned. j The London Stock Exchange is greatly | depressed, owing to the turn of events in I the Near East. i Consols fell to £83 15/-, but subsequently recovered to £84 2/6, as against £S5 15/- a week ago. There was free
selling in all classes of stocks.
