TBAGEDY AT WOOIXOOMOOLOO Thomas Daly, 31, who was found lying in Waine-street, Woolloomooloo, by the police on Baturday night, and, who was afterwards removed from the police cells to the Sydney Hospital, and admitted in an unconscious condition with a cut on the head, died at that institution early on Tuesday morning. The police have the matter in hand, and, as a result of their investigation, it is stated that deceased was in the company of a woman on Saturday nightj i when another man accosted them, and I quarrelled with the woman. Deceased is j said to have remonstrated with the man, and a scuffle ensued, in which, it is alleged, deceased was knocked down and re- ! ceived the injury which caused his death. A CLERGYMAN ON GTJABD. In connection with the "retaking" of the Anglican vicarage at Alexandra, it , his transpired that the church corporaI tion trust caused an application to be served on Mrs. Scott, wife of the Rev. E. H. Scott, about three weeks ago, demanding possession of the premises forthwith. Three months ago a similar application was made, which was ignored, the Rev. E. H. Scott awaiting for an ejectment order from the Courts. This course the authorities had not adopted. Mr. Scott intends to hold possession until removed by law, and remains on guard. He never leaves the house for a minute. The household effects are still in the hands of the authorities. DETERMINED ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. A man named Walter Rossi, aged about 35, who had for years been a trusted servant of the Western Australian Bank in Perth, made a most determined effort to end his life on August 10. For some days he complained of feeling unwell, and on Friday was unable to resume his duties at the bank. He retired early on Sunday night. When a yardman was proceeding along a paved right-of-way under the window of the room occupied by Rossi at the City Hotel, he was startled at seeing Rossi fall to the flags. He called to a fellow-em-ployee to assist him in attending to Rossi, whereupon the latter said: "I j have not fallen; I am trying to commit suicide, but I have made a mess of it. My time has not come yet. Get mc a bucket of hot water so that I may put my head in it" Rossi later asked for a rug, as he felt cold. He was found to have sustained fearful injuries. The fall caused both thighs to be smashed, and it was subsequently ascertained that he had swallowed a large quantity of tincture of iodine. As" that had not worked fatal results quick enough he cut his throat, and held himself over the washbasin, which he desired to catch the blood. Fearing that this second attempt would prove futile, Rossi jumped from his bedroom, and feß a distance of 20ft. He was at once removed to the hospital, where it was found that injuries to the throat were severe, though none of the large veins had been severed. Rossi has not since lost consciousness, and has been able to converse with doctors and police. He came from Adelaide, and has heen entrusted by the bank with the opening of several country branches. It is not considered likely that there is anything wrong with Rossi's affairs at the institution.
