The housebreaking fraternity remained, happily, in very insignificant evidence durj ing the festivities of Fleet week, even the gentlemen of the jimmy and dark lantern | apparently laying aside the practice of their regular profession to welcome the visitors. The raider had but time to gather up one or two unconsidered trifles when the interruption to his inspection occurred,, though he made good bis escape without a personal encounter with the occupants. The driver of one of Messrs R. Salmon and Co.'s carts had a near call in Lower Queen-street yesterday afternoon. The horse was travelling at a brisk trot when a shaft broke, and down went the steed, while the driver shot oMt of his cart right ou the track of an approaching tramcar. Fortunately, both motorman and the sprcadeaglcd driver retained a steady grip of their faculties, the former switching off the current, and the other man rolling desperately, aespite the shock of' the fall. with. the. result that a sovere slinking was the only casunity. The New Zealand Industries Exhibition, at the Town Hall site, closes its season this evening.
