(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) A FOOTBALLER'S DEATH. GISBORNE, this day. Roderick Campbell, aged.2s, grazed his knee a fortnight ago while playing football. Two days later symptoms of bloodpoisoning developed, from which he died last night. LABOUR CONDITIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. . Twenty-four men were dispatched yesterday to railway works at Broken River and eight more follow to-morrow. The labour market is again normal, with every prospect of a strong demand for farm and unskilled labour during the next few weeks if the weather holds as fair as it is now. There are nearly 300 men employed at Broken .River. Fine weather has done much to ameliorate the discomforts of the new swamps, and the men are contented. BURGLARY AT OAMARU. OAMARU, this day. What appears to have been an impudent attempt at burglary was perpetrated during the_ night. The premises of Mr H. Grcnfell, outfitter, of Thamesstreet, were entered by a back window, and, although nothing is so far missing, the office and contents were considerably ransacked. Some money lying in a box, though handy, was apparently overlooked. Further up the street a back window in Mr Mollison's boot warehouse was broken, and the workshop was entered. Here again nothing appears to have been taken. The police believe the burglary to be the work of juveniles. A DESERTER ARRESTED. NELSON, this day. At the Court, Aubrey Harold Smith, a stoker on the warship Pioneer, arrested at Motueka for desertion, was remanded to Wellington to await the arrival of the next warship. PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL. TIMARU, this day. There is every likelihood of Northern Union football being played in South Canterbury next season. Several prominent footballers who head the movement state that sufficient support will be forthcoming to start three senior teams. It is proposed to pay teams on tour for loss of time, and assist clubs in erecting training sheds, and to pay part of the expenses of junior teams travelling. Already £ 100 has been promised to set the game on a footing. CHARGE OF BURGLARY. GISBORNE, this day. The police arrested a young man named Joseph Dante last evening on a I charge of burglary, having entered a' boarding-house and stolen clothes and | money from the room of one of the boarders. In searching his effects the! police found articles that had been stolen from another boarding-house a few weeks back. Accused was brought before the Court to-day, and remanded. DUNEDIN ITEMS. DUNEDIN, this day. Obituary: Mr. Joseph McKay, proprietor of the City Boot Palace, and well-known in trotting circles. The cause of death was heart trouble, from which he had suffered many years. At a public meeting in Roxburgh, it was resolved to form the Teviot Mining Association to assist the Government in prospecting. A resolution was passed, asking the Government to send Dr. Bell, Government geologist, to report on the district. Application will be made to the Mines Department for the use of suitable plant to test likely gullies. Mary Cresswell, a middle-aged woman, was brought before the Police Court this morning on a charge of having used an instrument for an illegal purpose on a girl who was sentenced in the Supreme Court on Monday. Accused was remanded for eight days. WELLINGTON GAS COMPANY. WELLINGTON, this day. At a meeting of shareholders of the Wellington Gas Company to-day, it was decided to increase the capital of the Company to £400,000 by the creation of additional capital to the amount of £200,000, divided into 20,000 shares of £10 each, such shares to be issued as ordinary shares. The Company is carrying out new works. MISCELLANEOUS. FEILDING, this day. The Feilding Fruitgrowers' Association last night decided to import a number of little owls to keep down the small birds nuisance.
