ALLEGED HIGHWAY ROBBERY.
THE CHEISTCHURCH CHARGES. <Bj Telegraph.—Own Correspondent). CHRISTCHURCH, this day. There was only a normal crowd at the Court when the first case against the three alleged highwaymen, Johnston, Bolton, and Keegan, was called on. The accused had quite a jaunty air in the dock, and looked tidy, almost smart. They were unrepresented by counsel, but exercised the privilege of challenging the jury to the extent of objecting to one of those called. The indictment first taken is considered one of the strongest, as some of the property stolen, a ring, was found on Johnston, who, when asked to aeount for it, first said it was his wife's wedding ring, and then that he had bought it in Auckland. Both Johnston and Bolton crossexamined witnesses in a very self-pos-sesSed manner, but without shaking their testimony.
