MINE MANAGERS REPORT. Champion:—ln the battery level the drive lias been extended n further distance of 12ft. tbiough hard andeslte country. Progress has been slow owing to difficulties encountered in the rise workings, where, after rising 25ft. in solid country, a strata of loose ground, composed of clay and boulders, was met with. The manager Intends, during the present week to start sinking from the surface to meet the rise so as to get the connection through without further delay. All the country passed through contains values, thongh of low grade. At the outcrop working the trench being cut 10ft. uoithwards of the face is promising well. " There seems little doubt that we may confidently count on an indefinite payable ore reserve in this direction," reports the manager. " I sm for the present handicapped in being unable to deal with the bulk quantity until facilities arc completed, by connection tn the battery level, for doing so. I have traced what I cjtpect will prove to be a south-easterly cxlen-ion of the Champion lode. This lies ahont fifty yards from the outcrop and ntxv.it midway in depth to the cteek level. The assays show that this Is likely to lead to a find of importance. I am taking steps to have it tested during the coming week. Since the arrival of the machinery at the battery site the erection of the mill has been proceeding rapidly, and It should be In readiness for crushing withlu two months." Samples taken from the outcrop workings have given assay values of from £1 6/4 to £3 19/3 nor ton: from the surface workings, £1 6/4 to £7 5/ per ton; from the rise in the battery level, 12/1 to £1 0/3 per ton. Waitangi:—ln the course of his report the manager of the Waitangi mine states that no quartz has been broken down on the hangingwall of the main reef west of No. 1 crosscut at the low level in the western section during the past week. The dig has been advanced another 3ft. and 10ft. of the •reef are now stripped and ready for breaking down. The country looks well and Is of a good description for gold. Tills end will be stopped for a few days so that a connection may be made with the east and west drives. As soon as this has been completed, a start will be raede to timber up the drive, and g?t ready for putting no a rise to No. 2 levrt. On the hangingwall west of the main crosscut the drive has been advanced another Oft., and an average whitli of 3ft. of the hangingwall broken out. The reef continues to look well, and showed some nice dabs of gold In the ore broken out. The drive is in a total distance of 75ft. from the main crosscut. There is now about 15ft. to go to connect with the drive going east of No. 1 crosscut. In the eastern section the drive lv the low level east of No. 3 crosscut has been suspended until a rise has been connected with No. 2 level, by the way. Is at present being straightened. At the point where the manager intended to start (the first big bend) the drive is very small, and it has been found necessary to shoot off the sides and go back to open out room for storting, a crosscut. Everything is now ready to push on this work and cut the main reef as soon as possible. Tairua Conqueror.—Since my last report the crosscut has been advanced a further 17ft, making the total driven to date 74ft. The country is still of a kindly nature, and qnartz ana silica leaders are continually being met with. Tnirua Triumph.—Bluff level: This drive has been extended 10ft for the week, making the total distance from mouth cf tunnel 20ft. At a point 16ft in n quartz leader about 2 inches through was cut, containing a good percentage of iron pyrites, with no visible gold. The country is still rhyollte, but indications point to a change, and I am in hopes before my nest report to intersect the sandstone country, which I think is not far distant. Good progress Is being made with the tramline to the ore paddock, and next week a start will be made to get the points down, and rails into face of crosscut. This will enable the mullock to be transported over the tip more speedily than at present, which work is being done with the wheelbarrow. Kiri Kiri. —The newly-appointed mine manager, Mr. D. Lougtuin, reports as follows:—The north drive on the Horseshoe reef has been continued since I arrived with two shifts of men, and very eood progress is being made. The reef is encased in an excellent class of country. The reef formation from hanging-wall to footwall is about SfX. There waft, a. marked irunrove-

ment In the quartz on the hangingwall yesterday, more qnartz making, with good mineral showing through It I saved some of it In. order to test it. The level has been extended lift, and timber placed in position. The drain has also been continued up near the face. The country is becoming firmer, and an improvement in the value of the ore may be met with any shift, and I hope soon to be able to report meeting with rich ore. v Phoenix.—Last Wednesday we had an official trial of the new suction gas engine. The engine worked very satisfactorily. Mount Zeehan.—The mine manager reports for week ending 15th Inst:—On account of working short-handed during fleet week, only one shift has been employed, and the winze has been sunk a further distance of 4ft. This brings its down the required depth, according to survey, but the winze being in the cast wall of the rise, it will mako *he distance s- fevv feet more. Tangiaro: The manager reports that the level going north from the shaft has now been driven for a distance of 10ft. and the country rock looks very favourable for gold. With another 10ft. or 12ft. of driving; we should intersect the Bremner Reef, and this I expect to do about Friday. I have just made a start driving on the level going south-west, and am working there with one shift only.
