Further information was needed before the sinking of the shaft could be commenced. After further sinking of their shaft the Extended Company intended to open out two crosscuts, one of which would especially prospect the Pride ground. Mr F. llaszard, surveyor, considered that to work the claim efficiently a shaft of about 1000 ft deep would need lo be sunk, costing about £10,000 or £12,000. The proposed Extended Company's crosscuts would prove useful to the Pride in indicating the situation for the Pride shaft. F. Stewart, mine manager of the Extended Company, said that the company Intended to open up two crosscuts when the shaft was down 60 feet, in about two months' time it was probable that the crosscuts would be commenced, aud would no doubt prove beneficial to the Pride of Waihi. The Warden poiuted out that it was never the intention of the Act to allow anyone to hold a claim for eight years without doing anything. He did not consider the applicatiou a reasonable one. as he was of opinion that the two men were not sufficient.
