POLICE COURT.
(Before Messrs. B. Ford and F. J. H. Ellisdon, J.P.'s.) EXCHANGING BOOTS. John Berchmann White, a tall young man, originating from Dublin, admitted having taken the pair of boots, but denied being guilty of intentional theft. A pair of boots much like the ones in question were given him by a chance acquaintance, and last night, being down by the waterside, he was invited aboard a launch, on which he gratefully accepted a shakedown for the night. In the morning he put his boots on, as he thought, and departed, but later in the day he was arrested for stealing them. According, however, to the other ew
dence forthcoming, White's mistake was of an altogether glaring variety, so he was sent to -Mt.-Eden gaol for one mouth. TO TE KUITI. William Smith, the man who has been remanded several times on a charge of having stolen some whisky at Te Kuiti, was this morning, on the application of Chief-detective Marsack, finally remanded to appear at the King Country township on the 20th inst. INEBRIATE. Roy Howarth was fined £1 and _/• costs, default 48 hours, for the lapse, and was convicted and ordered to appear for sentence when called upon for disregarding the proprieties at His Majesty's Theatre while under the influence. Margaret Wilkie was convicted, and ordered back to the Salvation Army Home; one first offender paid the usual penalty, and two others forfeited their bail. Albert Wright, accused of having committed mischief while exhilarated, was remanded for medical attention.
