BOXING.
I At a meeting of the council of the i N.Z. Boxing Association, held last night, I j it was resolved to invite centres to send i representatives to a conference to be ; I held on the afternoon of August 19, the I date of the Jf-Z. championship meeting. ; The carnival of the Northern Boxi ing Association, which took place in His I Majesty's Theatre on Monday last, at- ' tracted one of the largest audiences yet i seen in the building. The star event . of the evening was a bit of a disap- , pointment, Ross making a very poor I show, being palpably out of condition, x and his display wae a long way below - the ft>rm shown in former contests. 5 Tracey turned out in great fettle, and, - except for a dying effort by Ross in the 5 seventh round, had much the best of it 3 throughout. < The disappointment in the star turn i was amply compensated by the exhibii tion given by the two bantams, Menzies i and Montague, it being willing from the s gong. Menzies fought Kln» a tiger,, and.
ad Montague alt but out after 53 sees, c the second. round had been fought hen the towel was thrown in. from his jrasr. Menzies is the most promising td yet seen, out in; Auckland. The wrestling contest betwen Leslie nd Fulton was a splendidly contested ne, both, men being very evenly latched. Leslie was the cleverer of he pair, showing considerable skill in efence; and, although, Fultoa was on he attack practically throughout, he ras unable to break down Leslie's deance, and a draw was declared, after .bout forty minutes'- wrestling. Little Tibby Watson, the Australian ancam weight, was fighting in Park for. a one journal said, a. purse of £2000! "robably a mistake was made, and £120 leant, for Watson was never a "flyer** t the* game, though, a good man, and s game a. little chap as one may wis-b o ace in the ring. But he cannot besckoned a "drawing: card." It was, in eed. aomewc-at surprising to find him eing selected by the Frisian boxing romoters to meet the coloured Yanicee rack Kid Davis, a very smart youth meed, to whom Watson had to concede eight, weight, and reach. The contest -•as advertised as being 20 three-minute otmds, wriJi 4oz gloves. On entering he ring, Davis, who had, of course, a ecided advantage both in weight and eight, commenced to force matters, but Vatson was remarkably clever in avoid--3g punishment, and the way he evaded ome ugly swings from the Kid evoked onsiderable applause. Davi3, however, ontinued his attack, and finished the ound by. landing- some heavy body lows. Coming up for the second round he two men adopted cautious tactics. Vatson scoring on the coloured crack's ice, but with little effect. After a spell f clinching, Davis set about his opponent a great style, and got in more body unches, finally flooring his man, who ras saved by the gong. Watson came ,p plucky for the third, but a. hard swing rom Davis' left put the Australian to leep.
