THE FERRY BUILDINGS.
HARBOUR BOARD'S REPLY TO CITY COUNCIL PROTEST. Iα- connection -with a letter from the City Council, Telative to the necessity of putting back the ferry buildings on the new Queen-street wharf, the Chairman, of the Harbour Board said at this afternoon's' meeting , that he ■α-as satified there was some mistake, since the buildings would not project bo far as the City Council eeemed to think. It . was impossible for the Board to have I a Toadway 125 ft. wide. It would mean f a tremendous- expense to do as the City Council and Chamber of Commerce desired. ■ Mr McFariane suggested that members of the City Council and Chamber of Commerce should be invited to go over the ground with the Chairman. Mr. Napier said there were other questions involved. It would mean a very considerable amount of money to bring about the works proposed. It was estimated that the ferry building 3 would run into £70,000, but he thought it more likely it would run into £ 90,000. The cost of a police barracks would •bring the cost of the two buildings up to close on £100,000. On looking over designs of ferry buildings in other parts of the world, he was surprised to find that 'While- the San Francisco ferry buildings covered a lot of ground, and looked well, they had not cost more than £25,000. Then there was the Manukau Harbour which they had taken over, and that would necessitate- an expenditure of £20,000 at Onehunga. The chairman said that ihe was of the opinion that the walls were quite wide enough. The wharf was 280 ft wide, and the roadway would be 60ft wide. On each side of this road would be 80ft buildings, and then again 30ft roadways. It was agreed to ask members of the City Council and Chamber of Commerce to meet the chairman of. the Board. "
