WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION.

CEy Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. The progress in the south-east crosscut at No. 4. level in the Waihi Grand Junction Mine is, in spite of the hard country, proceeding quickly. During the progress of 30gt. two distinct changes of country have been met with. Hard blue andesite country was encountered, when it -suddenly changed to hard, tight, black andesite intermixed I with stringers of quartz. The crossJ'eut has been advanced 490 ft. from the I shaft. The face is particularly hard, I intermixed with a number of quartz i stringers. The black andesite has been jin evidence for the past 15ft. Driving jon the reef east and west is also being prosecuted. At the time of writing the sulphide portion of the reef is narrower than heretofore. This appears to be characteristic of the lode, as it narrows and widens in the course of the progress of driving. The shaft is now down about 70ft. below No. 4 level.

J PHOENIX GOLD MINING COMPANY, | LIiLTTED.

j Mr. C. Bull, the -newly-appointed mine manager, met the - directors at Mr. ; Stevenson's (the secretary) office on the 16th inst. He reported that he had made a careful inspection of the present workings, and wa3 satisfied that the mine had a great futurS, as there are jat least three reefs traversing the pro- : perty, varying in size up to 40 feet in width. The lode now being worked upon is from ISm to 2ft in w»dth, and carrying a band of rock sulphide ore about four inches in width. Mr. Bull brought up samples of this ore, taken, from the 20 feet and 80 feet levels, which have given high assay values. Mr, Bull recommended the replacement of the presont engine pump and winding gear by more powerful 'machinery, and that the shaft should be sunk another 100 feet and the reef opened out upon at 160 feet, i.e., SO feet lower than the present level. The directors decided to carry out Mr. j Bull's recommendation, and also to erect .shanties for the men working at the I mine, and operations will be vigorously j proceeded with.

WAIHI CONSOLIDATED.

Mr. J. Ziman has paid another £100 for the extension of the option over the Waihi Consolidated G.M. Company's property.

MAORTLAND.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent). WAIHI, this day. I The manager reports that on Saturday last, at knock-off time, he fired two holes, but did not return to the fact. On Monday he discovered that: - one of the shots had broken into an ! I old drive, but, until he was sure it! would have any effect upon the Youn<» . New Zealand reef, he did not think it of sufficient importance to send a re- . port. He then discovered the reef was four feet below the drive, and had not , been touched by the old workings. The ; hanging wall of the reef was met with I and the ore body is three feet in width! ' He is continuing the drive patt the - banging wall of tbe reef; aadH__ cut

a small rib of quartz, which is showing sulphide. As it is a great mistake to have persons visiting the mine, and circulating sensational reports in Waihi> the manager his put a door at the top of the rise.
