The question of opening np better communication between Thames and the Fiako district by meau-j of a bridge or a ferry over the Thames River, has for some time past engaged the attention of the local bodies interested. A conference was held between the Thames Borough Council and the Harbour Board on Thursday, when ooa- ,. siderable discussion ensued as to the respective merits of the two proposals, the ! majority being of the opinion that to erect ) a traffic bridge at the present juncture I would be somewhat premature, and that a good ferry service would meet the requirements of the district for the present. It was resolved; "11181 the conference use its best endeavours to get a sufficient sum ;of money placed upon the Estimates during j the cominu session for the establishment jof an efficient ferry service across the : Thames River, so as to open up communi- ! cation with the Piako district, the terminus !on the eastern side of the river to be at I Kopn, at a point convenient to the railway I station." Another resolution was passed protesting against a fixed ferry being placed below Cryer"s landing, on account qf interference with navigation and danger to life. The meeting decided to forward the resolutions to the Minister for Marine, and to the Hon. J. McGowan, and to request the latter to move In the direction of having n sufficient sum placed on the Estimates for the purpose.
